Why do subjugated people adopt the religion of their oppressors?

Specifically how come there are so many black christians? I mean, christians came to Africa, abducted your ancestors, tortured them, mutilated them, and kept them in . And now you worship the same god they did? It's like if Muslims made all Americans slaves then later on down the road we get freed and decide to become Muslims. Can anyone make sense of this?
