What happens after death when someone dies and how can the dead be sleeping yet be in heaven or hell?

I've wondered about that before as well. After pondering on it for a long time I have come up that when you died its sort of like sleeping. Time flies by, years and years p in a second. Your spirit will remain "sleeping" until Judgement Day (the day Jesus returns). That is when he will judge the dead and the living.
