Is it safe to sit in your car with all the windows up and it running with the air conditioner on?

I thought you could get carbon monoxide poisoning and die from sitting in a running car with the windows up, some people died at the drive in sitting in their car with the windows up and the heater on, in my hometown. So is it dangerous, or not?
