Is it more chivelrous to raise concerns for other "poor" countries than our own?

We have famous celebrities bending over backwards to try to raise awareness and concern for poor third world countries. There are groups building houses in these countries for free while there are thousands of people (including entire families/children) living here in the U.S. without homes/shelter or in such dangerous subsidized housing complexes that they'd be safer living in a cardboard box in the middle of nowhere. There are thousands of children in the U.S. whom are never adopted or know of what a family is, but they're pushed aside for the martyrism of saving a third world child? We have millions of working-cl "poor" while the rich get richer in our own country. Yet, no one seemingly wants to deal with our own issues at home or help those in need in the "scary" parts of our cities where even minor "fix-up" or neighborhood safety would mean as much as a new house. What purpose does it serve to enhance other countries while our own country is deteriorating internally?
