Animal shelter volunteers: what to expect?

When I worked at a shelter they basically just had me clean cages and give baths. It was kind of boring. I later got a job at a boarding facility and ended up learning most things (handling aggressive dogs, approaching frightened, snappy dogs) by myself. I think it depends on what shelters allow volunteers to do.
