What Am I thinking of?

Can someone help me?? There's a book or film or tv programme about a girl who's Dad kills her mum and goes to prison and she goes to live with her cousin, aunt and her ex lover in a pub, as she grows up she dates him and they live together, she volunteers in a refugee camp, she favours a little girl and treats her, taking her for tea etc... Her "uncle" that became her lover flew gliders i think, and the little girl carried a pikachu toy or something like that. And i think her cousin went into army or something. can anyone tell me the name???? It's bugging me
